Photoshop is undoubtedly the most used, most popular and powerful image editing software in the world, and although many of today's current Photoshop users may not be able to imagine a world without an application, it's important to remember that Photoshop has only existed for a while. It would be easy to assume that a team of boffins created a feature-rich and powerful app like Adobe Photoshop that has worked tirelessly for years and years. Although this may be fairly accurate for later versions of the app, the original software was created by two brothers (with the little help of their father).
In 1987, Thomas Knoll was a doctoral student at the University of Michigan, where he studied engineering. Thomas was always interested in photography like his father and had a dark room in the basement of his house.
Thomas Glenn Knoll's father was a professor at a local university. Like his son, he was also interested in photography and computers. Glen was one of the first people to own an Apple II Plus computer in his hands, allowing him to take him home from work.
One day, Thomas wrote a small subroutine for a program in Apple II Plus for his father that allowed him to translate monochrome images of gray on his screen. After working a little more in the program, Thomas was able to create a series of processes that applied various effects to images on the screen.
It was a fairly primitive program by today's standards, but considering that it was 1987, this was a fairly innovative technology.
While Thomas was studying at university, John Knoll (his brother) was working on special effects in Light Industrial and Magic by George Lucas. When he saw what Thomas created in Apple II for his father, he told Thomas that he should turn his program into a complete photo editor.
John and Thomas started working together on the app. Using Thomas' programming experience and John's design experience, the brothers improved the initial application, and in 1988, they released a piece of software called "Image Pro".
